Where it wins:

- A massive ecosystem of plugins and themes covers most common needs out of the box
- Clients can update text, images, and posts themselves, with no developer needed for routine changes
- Lower upfront cost for a solid, professional result
Where it struggles:
- Every extra plugin adds weight, and a heavily-plugged-in site can slow down noticeably
- More moving parts means more to keep updated and secured over time
- Without real customization, sites can start to feel like every other WordPress site
Custom-built: precise, fast, built for exactly one thing
Where it wins:
- Ships only the code the site actually needs, nothing more, which usually means faster load times and stronger Core Web Vitals
- Full design freedom, since there’s no theme or plugin structure to work around
- Easier to shape precisely around a brand’s identity rather than adapting a template to fit
Where it struggles:
- Higher upfront time and cost, since more is built from scratch
- Content updates typically need developer involvement, unless a lightweight CMS layer is added on top
- Fewer instant, pre-built integrations, so third-party tools sometimes need custom work to connect
So which one is right for you?
A rough rule of thumb: if you need frequent content updates from a non-technical team, a content-heavy site, or a tight budget and timeline, WordPress is usually the smarter starting point. If performance, a distinctive design, or a lean marketing/portfolio site matter more than frequent edits, custom-built tends to pay off.
